Shawn Achor is the author of the new book The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work.

One of the core teachings Shawn talks about is that a fundamental flaw in our search for happiness is to buy into the notion of “I’ll be happy when …”

Rather, we would be better served to adopt a thought pattern that instead says something like “By being happy, I’ll …”

I had the privilege of first seeing happiness author Shawn Achor speak at a conference I was attending in Cancun, Mexico in 2007.

At the time, Shawn was serving as the Head Teaching Fellow with Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar of the most popular class at Harvard University … “Positive Psychology”. The class enrolled 1 out of every 7 Harvard undergraduates making it the most popular class in the university.

I remember at the time being very taken with Shawn’s principles of authentic happiness and what much of the emerging science of happiness was really telling us about how we live our lives and the importance of the role happiness plays in our health and well being.

So I was pleased to come across an article by Shawn published at the Huffington Post.

What I especially like about the authentic happiness tips that Shawn discusses in the article … which also provides great background to findings in his new book … is that they are grounded in legitimate research.

It’s one thing to talk about the importance of being and feeling genuinely happy from an anecdotal perspective, but it is a whole lot more convincing when you start to look at the findings of real research using disciplined methodology. This is part of why Shawn Achor’s work is so important and relevant.

So how can we pursue happiness right now? When I was counseling overwrought Harvard students, one of the first things I would tell them is to stop equating a future success (dating) with happiness. Dating does not mean you will be happy. If that was true, then everyone in a relationship would be happy. Look around and you’ll see enough empirical proof that relationship does not guarantee happiness. The same is true with success. Is everyone with a job happy? Then stop thinking that finding a job, getting a promotion, etc. is the only thing that can bring happiness. Success does not mean happiness. Check out the entertainment section of The Huffington Post to look for examples to disabuse you of thinking that being beautiful, successful or rich will make you happy.

Second, we need to break the belief that our external world (how much money we make, are we in a relationship, what the economy is doing, etc.) is predictive of our happiness. Only 10 percent of our long-term happiness is predicted by the external world; 90 percent of our long-term happiness is thus how our brain processes the external world. This is why we find people at the same job who are positive and love their work, and others see it as drudgery and stress. This is why some people love being single and others cannot stand it. The external world does not predict your happiness, which is a freeing scientific realization about how much control you actually have over your happiness.

Third, happiness is a work ethic. You have to train your brain to be positive, just like you work out your body. Doing one positive habit, like eight minutes of meditation a day, journaling for two minutes about a positive experience (it backfires if you write about negative ones!) or writing a two-minute long positive email to a friend once a day — all have been found in research over the past decade to significantly increase happiness, whatever your current life circumstances. Training your brain for gratitude is one of the most powerful ways to accomplish this. Gratitude is the recognition that the present can make you happy instead of waiting for a future event. Thus, if you think of three things you are grateful for over the course of 21 days, your level of optimism in life significantly rises.

Original story here

When you apply these authentic happiness tips to your own life on a consistent basis, you really do become the author of your own happiness. And that happiness then serves as the catalyst to your success and more enhanced experiences.

Are you applying the happiness formula correctly in your life?

Here’s The Lowdown On Who’s Really Responsible For Your Happiness … (Hint: It’s YOU)

By Warren Wojnowski

Do you feel unhappy and trapped in your present circumstances? It’s not an uncommon feeling, especially in today’s modern world. And it’s easy to believe you’re trapped without choices, that you’re somehow at the mercy of everything and everyone around you … that somehow your happiness depends on things over which you have no control.

Let me ask you this question: who is responsible for your happiness?

The answer … is YOU.

You have complete and total control over your happiness. If you find that hard to believe, consider this three happiness tips that will empower you to take responsibility for your own happiness:

1. Exercise your choice to be happy.

If you’re unhappy with where you are, recognize you are where you are because of the choices and decisions you’ve made up to now in your life. This is something that you may or may not at first blush agree with and it’s something that took me a long time to understand.

We’re conditioned to believe we have no choices. We live where we live because that’s where our parents lived. We work where we work because it’s the only job we believe we can get. The result is that we tend to get stuck in the status quo because we believe we have no choice.

Yet the truth is we always have a choice and, in fact, doing nothing to change our circumstances is in itself a choice. If you don’t like your job, why not look for another one? If you don’t want a job, why not start your own business? If you don’t like where you live, why not look for somewhere else to live?

Too often, we get caught in the trap of waiting for something or someone else to bring change to us, failing to realize that our happiness is our responsibility and no one else’s. You always have a choice to accept things the way they are or to begin to do something about it. You can make the choice of authentically being happy.

2. You can choose your own thoughts.

Taking personal responsibility for your happiness begins by beginning to deliberately choose your thoughts. Rather than buying into all of the “no you can’t” monkey chatter, start to deliberately think “yes I can”.

When you start deliberately choosing your thoughts, all of a sudden you begin to feel inspired and you start to look at the world and your circumstances in another way. You begin to see opportunities rather than problems. You begin to shift your mindset away from being a victim of your circumstances.

3. Take the action.

Once you begin to choose your own thoughts and start identifying opportunities, you begin to feel inspired. You start to feel yourself compelled to take certain actions that will begin to move you towards what you want. The minute you begin to take actions, you’ve begun the cycle of assuming responsibility for your results — and for your happiness.

If you’re not willing or afraid to take an action, ask yourself how badly you really want change. If you really want it badly enough, then take responsibility for initiating the action. There’s no point waiting for someone else to because that’s only going to prolong the current situation in which you’re unhappy.

Would you like more information about how to take personal responsibility for your own happiness?

Here Are 5 Keys About Authentic Happiness And How To Define It

By Warren Wojnowski

Happiness. Not just any kind of happiness, but authentic happiness. People write about it, sing about it, make films about it, talk about it, and certainly chase it. But what is it exactly?

How Do You Define Happiness?

This can be such a complex topic. We all carry our own ideals about what happiness is or isn’t and, consciously or not, it’s that ideal definition that tends to be driving us day to day.

Here are 5 key aspects of happiness for you to consider that may assist you in coming up with your own definition.

1. Happiness is relative.

When you think about being happy, if you’re like most people, you will tend to think of it in relative terms. For example, you may say “I want to feel happier” or “I’m just not happy”.

There’s an implicit contrast between how you feel right now relative to how you used to feel or how you’d like to feel. That’s part of the reason that happiness can be so elusive — we’re prone to constantly comparing and the present moment is the anchor point from which we compare.

2. Happiness is pleasure.

Things that give us pleasure or that we find to be pleasurable tend to make us feel happy. So there definitely is an aspect of happiness which is tied to the experience of pleasure. Pleasure though, tends to be a short term experience.

This may be another reason why the feeling of happiness can be so fleeting.

3. Happiness is meaning.

A deeper and more enduring quality of happiness seems to be tied to the sense of purpose or meaning you find in your life. The degree of self fulfillment you tend to feel determines your overall, long term state of satisfaction.

Do you feel satisfied, or are you feeling restless? Generally, in the absence of a worthy pursuit, you will tend to feel stuck and uninspired.

4. Happiness versus success.

Do you tend to view happiness and success as different things? If so, why?

If happiness is in fact what you most seek in life and if its absence leads to a lack of meaning, then doesn’t happiness imply success? Is it really possible to have one without the other? This is a personal line of questioning you will need to answer for yourself, but for me happiness IS success.

5. Happiness brings peace of mind.

Do you catch yourself longing for simple peace of mind? How would it make you feel if you just felt secure and satisfied with where you are at right now?

That’s the feeling we all seem to long for and it epitomizes the destination point most of us are really pursuing when it comes to the notion of seeking happiness. “I’ll be happy when … ”

The intriguing question for me is, which comes first? Is it the acquisition of happiness that gives me peace of mind, or is it peace of mind that gives me happiness? Hmm …

Is your life the fun and happy experience you want it to be? If not, why not?

In this article, we’re going to ways you can begin discovering how to have more fun in your life … afterall, if you’re not having fun, what’s the point?

You Can Choose To Have Fun

Yes, you read that right. You can choose to have fun.

In fact, you can make the choice to start having fun right now.

Life doesn’t have to be a grinding, energy draining, dog-eat-dog journey of trials and tribulations. Instead, it can be a fun, engaging set of experiences. But you have to decide that’s what it’s going to be.

You have to choose.

Here are 3 happiness tips to help you learn how to have more fun, day by day.

1) Paint your own picture.

Once you’ve made the decision to have fun with your life, that allows you free reign to paint your own picture. Where do you want to live? Who do you want to be? Who will you choose to be today? What are you going to try on today?

When you approach life with the attitude that life is supposed to be fun, you suddenly find yourself unwilling to accept anything less. And you bring more of yourself into your current situation, regardless of your circumstances.

2) Make your life an adventure.

Once you’ve decided on what picture you are painting, turn your life into an adventure. Put pictures and notes to yourself representing you vision on your fridge or bathroom mirror and keep revisiting the vision. Imagine how the things you want are going to begin to show up and reveal themselves to you today.

Embark on a great big treasure hunt as you move through the day, watching keenly for the clues that are there. Every time you see one, celebrate it. Write it down or take a picture. Keep track of how many clues you’ve found today.

Do you want a new car? Watch for the very car you want — the exact make, model, and color — around you. Where might it show up? Is that it over there parked on the street corner. Terrific! I’m so on purpose that the car I want has just presented itself to me. I wonder where else it’s going to show up. Hey, I know … why don’t I take a test drive?

3) We tend to regret the things we didn’t do.

At the end of your life, you want to be able to look back fondly on all of the things you accomplished, not look back with regret on the things you didn’t do. So what do you feel like doing? It’s pretty simple, really.

If it feels good and is moral and ethical, then do it. Make a game out of your life. How many things that I really want to do today can I fit in and around my obligations? Keep score. See if you can experience more things today than yesterday. See if you can find more clues that you’re on your purpose than yesterday.

How Minding The Language You Choose Can Have A Profound Impact On Your Level Of Happiness

By Warren Wojnowski

Do you find yourself feeling as though you’re taking one step forward and two steps back in your quest for happiness in your life? Does the inconsistency in how you feel about yourself frustrate you?

If so, you’re not alone. Better still … here’s a simple happiness tip that will help you break free from the one-step-two-step shuffle you may find yourself stuck in.

Your Happiness Is Influenced By Your Language

This may seem obvious (or not), but the language you use with others and especially with yourself establishes an emotional tone in your mind.

You’ve no doubt noticed that you have an ongoing commentary in your head. Many refer to it as your “monkey chatter” and it’s literally non-stop. It’s as if you have a sports commentator running around with you analyzing and commenting on your most recent “play” and performance.

Sadly for most of us, that commentary is almost exclusively focused on the negative. You’ll hear your commentary say things like “that was dumb”, “how could I be so stupid”, “things never work out for me”, and so on.

What kind of impact do you suppose such ongoing commentary has on your mind and your beliefs about yourself? How can you feel good about yourself if you’re constantly being told you’re not good enough?

You can’t.

So the solution is very simple. Choose your words and language carefully. Choose the words you think and choose the words you speak.

By becoming more aware of and where you use disempowering language, and then making a point of correcting, you will find yourself beginning to feel better and happier about yourself and where you’re going.

Words and Phrases to Use:

I will

I choose

However

Opportunity

I am committed

Definitely

Create

I’m moving forward

I’m going to

Now

Today

I can

I deserve

Assist

When

I will

Completed

I’m Finished

Done

Words and Phrases to Avoid:

Probably

I think

But

Problem

I can’t afford

Maybe

Work

I’m stuck

I want to

Later

Tomorrow

I can’t

I need

Help

If

I’ll try

Failed

I’m still …

Possibly

As you can see, there’s no rocket science here. Your language is either definitive and empowering or it’s indefinitive and disempowering. Always choose the words that will support you and avoid words that undermine you. Stay away from words like “don’t”, “not”, and “no”.

If you’re like most people, once you pay attention to the language you’re using when you think and speak, you’ll be amazed at how negative and unsupportive it really is.

Would you like more information about how to build the habit of supportive language and how that enables you to live a happier, healthier life? If you’d like to learn more powerful techiques that allow you to start living a happy life within a day, our 7 Steps To Happiness program is the best way for you to drastically improve your level of happiness, and you can start using the tips and techniques — and see results — IMMEDIATELY.

By Warren Wojnowski

If you’re like most people, you just want to feel happier with your life. So what’s holding you back? What is it that is getting in the way of you enjoying your life right now?

In this article, we’re going to focus on an essential happiness principle — and it’s almost certainly the one that is holding you back from the more exhilarating and joyful life you deserve.

Fear, Doubt and Worry Are All In Your Head

We live in a society that is preoccupied with all of the things that can go wrong in our lives. It dominates the news, water cooler conversations, television, radio … everything. As a result, it also tends to dominate your thinking.

What’s the result?

Fear.

You’re taught to be fearful of your financial future. You’re taught to be fearful of your safety. You’re taught to be fearful of your health.

This creates a tremendous psychological burden to carry. How can you possibly feel happy about your life when you constantly carry around fearful thoughts about your future?

You can’t.

And the fear spills over into constant self doubt and worry. The result is you become paralyzed, unable to think clearly and unable to take any confident action that might help you break free from your present gloom and doom.

Overcoming Fear Doubt And Worry In 3 Simple Steps

title="How to overcome fear, doubt, and worry" class="alignright" width="200" height="150" />1) The things you fear are imagined outcomes. When you stop to think about it, the fear you feel is an instinctive response. Your brain perceives a threat to your safety which heightens your alertness and creates a fight or flight response. And this serves you well in circumstances where there is an imminent physical threat.

However, the vast majority of fears you carry in the modern world are what I call psychological fears. They are about outcomes you imagine will happen in the future that you don’t want. Yet the sense of fear you feel around them is very real and the impact can be debilitating because your fight or flight response is kicking in in the present.

2) Ask yourself “What’s real?” Consider for a moment the number of things you have been afraid will happen to you — how many of them have actually happened?

The fact is, the vast majority of things you are fearful about and spend so much of your energy worrying about never come to be. But think about the emotional cost and the toll your obsession on your fears has cost you. Have your fears, doubt, and worry held you back from pursuing your dreams?

Think about this for a minute. Isn’t a dream simply an imagined future outcome that you do want? The only difference between a fear and a dream is that one represents what you do want while the other represents what you do want. They’re both imagined future outcomes.

3) Shift your focus on to your dream. Once you understand that your fears merely represent an undesirable future outcome, you’re half way to overcoming them. Because now you are acutely aware of what you don’t want. So the trick becomes to ask yourself what it is you do want.

What is it you want that negates the fear?

The minute you answer that question, you’ve begun to focus on your dreams. By placing your focus on your dreams, you begin to place your mental thought energy on what steps you can take to move yourself forward towards them. The minute you start doing that … guess what? You begin to feel better and more on purpose. Now you’ve put yourself in a position where you are able to observe your fears and then use that awareness to place your attention on your dreams instead.

A stronger sense of happiness and self fulfillment leads to a longer, healthier, and more rewarding life. That probably makes intuitive sense to you, but the question most of us struggle with is “how”. How do you actually make yourself feel happier?

In this article, I’m going to focus on a fundamental principle of happiness that ensures alignment with your life purpose.

Here’s How To Follow Your Bliss And Fulfill Your Life Purpose

Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.”
– Joseph Campbell

You’ve no doubt heard this advice before. “Follow your passion,” they say. Well, in order to follow your passion, you need to know what it is. Surprisingly most people don’t really know what they’re passionate about.

So where should you start?

Here are 3 simple steps you can begin to take today.

1) Write down your goals. What is it you want, right now, that is most important to you? This is such a powerful question. Take your time and think about the question. Then write down an answer.

Once you have your answer, flesh it out by writing a couple of paragraphs describing how you’d like your life to look based on what it is you said you want. Don’t hold back or censor yourself. Think of it as if you are writing a movie script or a story and just let the words flow.

Once you’re done, take a look again at what you’ve written. Based on what you have in front of you, what next steps do you see that you can begin to take over the next 7 days? What about the next 30 days? What about the next 90 days?

Write down your goals and revisit them daily. By completing this exercise, you have likely begun to zero in on something about which you are truly passionate. And you have likely identified some basic steps that will help you to move forward. This becomes the beginning of your road map for following your bliss.

2) Affirm your progress every day. Now that you’ve identified what it is you want that is most important to you and established some goals, the next step is to reinforce your progress towards your goals by using positive affirmations. This is simple and easy to do. Simply write out or speak a selection of phrases that you can repeat to yourself throughout the day.

You don’t need to make them complicated.

For example, “I am moving steadily towards my dreams”, or “I am a successful business owner”, or “I am a money magnet”. The point of affirmations is to create and maintain a positive feeling in your mind. Through repetition, you are training your subconscious mind to accept what essentially becomes a new belief system. Use the words “I am” and keep the statement short, positive, and supportive of the goals you’ve established.

3) Express your gratitude. Look for things in your life right now about which you are grateful. No matter what obstacles may be in front of you, there is always something if you look. Focus on the gratitude you feel — even if it’s simply for the air you breathe.

Gratitude is such a wonderfully positive feeling and it instantly lightens the load for you. By lightening the load, you create more room for your positive affirmations to work and it’s easier to remain focused on your goals. In this way, gratitude becomes a key ingredient to following your bliss.
